Welcome
The two story brick building, constructed in turn of the century character, has
housed the Gloucester Stage Company since the spring of 1986 when Founding
Artistic Director, Israel Horovitz, relocated the company to this East
Gloucester waterfront location, a former warehouse, donated by Gorton’s Seafoods.
In the ensuing years the Gloucester Stage Company has produced over a hundred
productions of America’s best theater, including over 30 world premieres. The
space has been used to exhibit paintings of local artists, to foster the
development of playwrights and designers, and to train a generation of young
actors from Cape Ann. The theater boasts: a 1700 sq. ft newly renovated lobby,
a 175 seat theater with a ¾ thrust, 600 sq ft stage, a large shop area and
comfortable dressing rooms and green room with a private bathroom and shower.
The entire complex has modern central heating and air conditioning.
In December of 2004, GSC purchased it’s home from its long-time landlord and
supporter, Gorton’s. We have become the owners of our own destiny and are
growing from operating an intimate, professional, summer theater to include
serving as a vital, year-round community resource.
Facility Information
Lobby:
The newly renovated 1700 sq. ft lobby is flooded with natural day light from the
four 6’ x 4.5’ windows. By night the dramatic ‘red wall’ is lit with halogen
lamps, attracting attention from each passing pedestrian and car. The 7’ long
‘Ticket’ counter is a convenient place to greet guests, place promotional
material, or accommodate your ticket sales. The 9’ long ‘Concessions’ counter at
the opposite end of the lobby fronts a fully equipped service area including a
three burner coffee machine and a 18 Cu. Ft refrigerator. The accompanying
café tables and chairs make this an ideal spot for a small reception or meeting
place. Six pairs of 115V, 20 Amp electrical outlets make it convenient to use
multimedia equipment for small presentations.
Theater:
The 600 sq. ft. stage is
surrounded on three sides with 175 seats (‘Thrust’). The control booth is
equipped with a sound system, consisting of two play back devices, a mixing
board, a two channel 270 Watt amplifier as well as a two scene preset lighting
control board. The stage has more than a dozen house lighting instruments,
providing a basic wash of light and two EV 15” speakers.
For more detailed technical equipment information please contact the GSC
Production Manager at
production@gloucesterstage.com or 978-281-4099.
Backstage:
Backstage
encompasses a large comfortable Green Room with two adjacent dressing rooms. The
Green Room offers a coffee machine, microwave and refrigerator and an audio
monitor to hear theater activity. The dressing rooms are outfitted with large
makeup counters, easily accommodating 4-5 performers. All three rooms are
illuminated with soft yet adequate incandescent lighting. Completing this area
is a toilet facility and private shower.
Other Information
Staff:
The Gloucester Stage
Company Production team is available to consult with the producer’s technical
staff, and orient them to facility use, as well as provide access to chairs,
tables and other facility owned equipment including our Lester Spinet piano (a
fee for use applies). On the day of the event, a GSC representative will act
as the Theatre Manager with expert guidance and assistance. The Gloucester
Stage Company also employs, on a seasonal basis for it’s own professional summer
season, many artists, technicians and administration staff. We are happy to
recommend some of these individuals to you should you wish to contract their
services.
Vendors:
The Gloucester Stage Company has a history of working with a number of local
area caterers, florists, photographers and other vendors. We are happy to
recommend their services, but visiting producers are not limited to their
services. All vendors must fulfill the insurance requirements as outlined in the
Guidelines and Policies handbook.
Accessibility:
The Gloucester Stage Theater is wheel chair accessible and wheelchair seating
is available in the theatre.
Parking:
Handicap parking is
available in the front of the theatre. Patron parking is available in the free
public parking lot on Rocky Neck Avenue a short, one-half block from the
theatre. Access to the parking spaces behind the theater, for producers staff,
is granted on a case by case basis by a GSC representative.
